How to Properly Use Edible Sugar Paper: A Step-by-Step Guide to Perfect Cake Decorating

Edible printing is one of the most effective ways to personalize desserts and create a "wow" factor for any celebration. Sugar paper (also known as icing sheets or frosting sheets) is thicker, sweeter, and visually more vibrant than wafer paper, making it ideal for transferring detailed photographs and graphics onto pastries. In this article, we will take a detailed look at how to properly prepare and apply sugar paper to cakes, cupcakes, and other treats so the image looks professional and doesn't melt prematurely.

Ingredients & Materials

  • Printed sugar paper (icing sheet)
  • Clean, dry scissors or a craft knife (for cutting out shapes)
  • The dessert base (cake, cupcakes, or cookies with suitable frosting or fondant)
  • Edible glue, piping gel, or a tiny amount of water (depending on the base)

Preparation and Application Process

  1. Preparing the base: Sugar paper applies best to buttercream, ganache, chocolate, or fondant. If you are using cream cheese or whipped cream (which have a high moisture content), you need to isolate the print – first apply it to a thin layer of fondant or chocolate backing. The surface should be smooth and even.
  2. Preparing the image: Always work with dry hands! Cut out the required shape. Remove the protective backing from the sugar paper only right before application. If the plastic backing is hard to peel, place the sheet in the freezer for 1–2 minutes.
  3. Application: Carefully place the image onto the dessert, starting from one edge to prevent trapped air. Gently, using dry hands or a dry paper towel, smooth the image out from the center to the edges.
  4. Fixing the paper: If applying to a dry surface (fondant or a baked cookie), slightly moisten the base with edible glue or water. For buttercream, no extra moisture is needed.

How to Use on Different Desserts

  • Cakes: Perfect as a centerpiece. You can use full-sized round/rectangular prints covering the whole top, or individual cut-out characters.
  • Cupcakes: Ideal for corporate events with logos or children's parties. To keep the edible image flat and prevent it from absorbing moisture from the frosting, it is highly recommended to stick the sugar paper onto a small fondant disc before placing it on top of the cupcake swirl.
  • Cookies: Sugar paper turns cookies into great personalized gifts. Apply it directly onto completely dried royal icing using a little piping gel, or onto a fondant base.

The Result

When applied correctly, the sugar paper melts seamlessly into the dessert. Its texture becomes soft and easy to cut, while the colors remain bright and vivid, creating a smooth, photorealistic decoration.

Useful Tips

  • Image Quality: Before printing or uploading your design, ensure your image is high-resolution. Low-quality files will look blurry and pixelated when printed with edible inks.
  • Storage: Always store unused sugar paper in an airtight ziplock bag at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and humidity. Never store it in the fridge, as condensation will cause the edible inks to bleed.
  • Shipping & Transport: If you are preparing printed cookies or treats to ship to customers (e.g., via automated parcel machines), ensure your packaging is sturdy and moisture-proof. Edible paper is highly sensitive to condensation inside the box, so make sure all components are completely dry before sealing.
